Kansas City, MO (March 9, 2004) Discover Vision Centers was selected as one of five U.S. sites for FDA clinical trials of PermaVision – an intracorneal lens implant that corrects hyperopia, or farsightedness.
Dr. John Doane, a senior partner at Discover Vision Centers, will perform the first PermaVision implant in the Kansas City area this week.
The PermaVision procedure builds upon the LASIK model and improves the treatment of farsightness.
The lens is implanted using a flap created in the cornea, as in LASIK. The lens is placed under the flap and centered over the pupil. The flap is then laid back down over the lens. Where LASIK removes tissue to change the shape of the cornea, PermaVision adds tissue to change the shape of the cornea. The PermaVision lens can be removed or exchanged if necessary.
“About 30% of the population in the U.S.A. is farsighted. PermaVision will correct this.” said Doane. “What is truly remarkable is that the lens can be removed if necessary,” he added.
The PermaVision lens steepens the outer surface of the eye, thus correcting the refractive error by properly focusing light onto the retina. If the vision should change for any reason, the corneal flap can be lifted and the lens removed or replaced.
Discover Vision has been serving the Kansas City community for 30 years. The company boasts eight eye center locations; three LASIK refractive surgery centers and two ambulatory surgery centers; and 14 ophthalmologists and 15 optometrists who see more than 800 patients each day.
