Astigmatism

What is Astigmatism?

In the normal eye, light entering the cornea in the horizontal (blue) and vertical (red) planes is bent proportionally, so that an image is clearly focused on the retina. Astigmatism occurs when the shape of the cornea is not spherical, causing light rays in one plane to not focus on the retina, resulting in blurred vision.

Treatment of Astigmatism

Traditionally, corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) are used to compensate for astigmatism. Most cases of astigmatism may be corrected with LASIK laser vision correction.
