Exam Frequency
You should have your child's vision checked according to the following schedule:
| Age Exam Frequency | |
| 0 to 24 months | By 6 months of age |
| 2 to 5 years | At 3 years of age |
| 6 to 18 years | Before first grade and every two years thereafter |
Infants’ Vision
At birth, babies have limited vision but can see faces at close range. At six weeks an infant’s eyes should follow objects and by four months should work together. By the age of two, babies usually see like adults, around 20/30.
Indicators of Poor Vision
- one eye turns or crosses
- child is uninterested in faces or age-appropriate toys
- eyes rove around or jiggle (nystagmus)
- tilting the head and squinting
Babies are unable to communicate vision problems, so eye exams are important.
