SMILE Vision Correction Kansas City Star Interview with Dr. John Doane
Dr. Doane is one of only five ophthalmologists in the U.S., and the only eye doctor in the Kansas City area to participate in the research trials for SMILE Vision Correction. He is training other surgeons, as well as speaking domestically and internationally on his experience with SMILE.
The Kansas City Star article, “Developed in Germany, tested in Leawood, new laser eye surgery taking off,” tells the story of 29-year-old Nick Wagoner. Nick has worn eyeglasses and contact lenses since the fifth grade. Leaving the day of his surgery, Nick gave his wife a thumbs up on the process. PRK, LASIK and SMILE are different types of laser eye surgery. Each procedure corrects refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) by reshaping the cornea. Depending on the individual, one option may be more suitable than the other. Furthermore, each procedure offers its own benefits.
PRK is a type of refractive procedure where an epithelial layer is removed. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea. The epithelial layer regenerates naturally over the corneal surface. Because the cornea needs more time to heal with PRK, recovery time takes slightly longer than LASIK.
During LASIK surgery, a thin flap is created using a femtosecond laser. Once the flap is lifted, the laser is used to reshape the cornea, and the flap is returned where it heals within a few minutes. LASIK was approved by the FDA in the mid 1990s. Continuous advancements have been made in the technique over the past two decades. Because of faster healing time and the high level of precision, LASIK is a popular choice for vision correction.
SMILE is the latest advancement in vision correction, different than LASIK or PRK. However, it combines the benefits of both procedures. During SMILE, there is no flap created. A lenticule is created inside the cornea and then extracted through a very small incision, one-tenth the size of that for LASIK. Because there is no flap created, SMILE is minimally-invasive with less incidence of dry eye. SMILE Vision Correction was recently approved by the FDA to treat myopia, or nearsightedness.
