Repairing the I-470 291 Highway Bridge

Repairing the I-470/Route 291 bridge

As you may know, I-470 / Route 291 bridge project is now undergoing extensive construction. From Independence at the I-470/Route 291 and I-70 interchanges, you should expect significant delays due to one or two lane traffic.

We apologize for any delays this may cause you.  If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call 816-478-1230.

Details on the Construction

Crews will rehabilitate the north and southbound lanes of the Little Blue River bridges, the U.S. 40 bridges, and the I-470 bridges over I-70 beginning this month. Repairs are being made at the I-470/Route 291 interchange, 40 Highway, and the Little Blue River bridges.

I-470 will be reduced to one lane in both north and southbound directions from 39th Street to the Little Blue River just south of 40 Highway.  Please expect major traffic backups with delays that could reach up to 75 minutes or more, given no incidents occur within the work zone.

Avoid the area, or if possible, find an alternate route at

If you must travel this route, plan ahead and leave early.

Expect various loop ramp closures to and from I-70. During the repair work, the loop ramps to and from I-70 will be closed for 20 to 25 days.

Use the zipper merge and take turns at the merge points.

I-470 will be reduced to one lane between 39th Street and the Little Blue River between 8 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday. (August 3 – 6) The left lane closure will allow crews to do pavement work in preparation of the final phase of the project, which will begin in mid-August.

That phase will focus on bridges at the I-470/Missouri 291/Interstate 70 interchange in Independence as well as U.S. 40 highway and Little Blue River.

How will this impact traffic during construction?

I-470 will remain open during construction but lanes will be impacted and drivers will encounter delays during peak travel times.

In many cases these bridges will require closing two lanes to work on one side then switching traffic to complete the other. Some bridges will be completely closed.

Ramp closures will be required at the I-470 and View High Dr. interchange, and at the I-470 and I-70 interchange.

Possible alternative routes include Missouri 7, U.S. 40, U.S. 350 and I-435.

The work on the bridge over I-70 is expected to be completed within two months, and the entire project is expected to wrap up in November.

Once again, if you need to speak to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call 816-478-1230. For more information on the construction, visit MoDOT for details and updates.
