What is a Cataract?
More than 50% of people over age 60, and some younger, have cataracts. A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens. Cataracts interfere with light passing through to the retina. Because cataracts worsen over time, you may not notice gradual changes in vision. Vision changes are like looking through a waterfall or wax paper. As a result, daily tasks like reading and driving become more difficult. Symptoms may include:
- Bothersome glare
- Halos around lights
- Distorted vision
- Double vision
- Difficulty with night vision
- Yellowing or fading of color
- Frequent changes in prescription
How are Cataracts treated?
There is no treatment to reverse or prevent cataracts. To achieve clear vision, the cataract must be removed. When you reach the point that cataracts begin to interfere with your daily activities, you should discuss cataract surgery with your eye doctor.
What should I expect when having Cataract surgery?
During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) to achieve clear vision. The procedure only takes a few minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis with local or “eye drop” anesthesia. Cataract surgery is a gentle, no-stitch procedure which is safe and effective.
